 As someone who is disturbingly consumed by the recent shooting in Florida, (one of the two states I know to call "home,") I am deeply troubled with all the past events involving mass murders. As Bob's publicist, we have discussed holding this topic on his show, "Insight into Mental Health." We will be delving into this matter to see what part mental illness may play in these horrific events. As I am studying, I have chosen to share what I am learning, as I engage in this deeply troubling topic.
As a former student who studied medical terminology, I was forced to learn various terms to pass my class. Initially, it was as if I was studying a foreign language. I almost quit school due to this. But then I understood the premise and perhaps this is what drives me to learn more about Mental Illness and the role it may play in society. PSYCHO: (mind) *Taken from my “A Quick Reference to MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY” 2002 Edition PATH: (disease) *Taken from same reference book PSYCHOPATH: (Dictionary.com) a person with a psychopathic personality, which manifests as amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc. SOCIO: (social or society) *Only found online, not in my reference book. PATH: (disease) as stated above SOCIOPATH: *Mayo Clinic Antisocial personality disorder, sometimes called sociopathy, is a mental condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others. ... Individuals with antisocial personality disorder often violate the law, becoming criminals. WEBMD STATES: People with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) can be witty, charming, and fun to be around -- but they also lie and exploit others. ASPD makes people uncaring. Someone with the disorder may act rashly, destructively, and unsafely without feeling guilty when their actions hurt other people. Modern diagnostic systems consider ASPD to include two related but not identical conditions: A "psychopath" is someone whose hurtful actions toward others tend to reflect calculation, manipulation and cunning; they also tend not to feel emotion and mimic (rather than experience) empathy for others. They can be deceptively charismatic and charming. By contrast, "sociopaths" are somewhat more able to form attachments to others but still disregard social rules; they tend to be more impulsive, haphazard, and easily agitated than people with psychopathy. ASPD is uncommon, affecting just 0.6% of the population. Candice DeLong, former psychiatric nurse, turned FBI profiler, turned narrator of shows such as “Deadly Women” and “Facing Evil” stated this back in 2015 (Credit to Luaine Lee of Tribune News Service – 2015) “When I was little I was raised Catholic, so evil to me means the devil with a pitchfork. I think of all the people I’ve interviewed that have committed murder, in my show it’s been 36, and in my two careers many more than that. I’ve interviewed very few natural-born killers.” Candice DeLong also stated, “Psychopaths are born, sociopaths are made. They have a lot of similar characteristic but how they come about is different.” She says babies who suffer physical neglect or abuse hate the world by the time they’re 12 or 13 and become sociopaths. But with psychopaths, it’s a matter of genetics. “Psychopaths lost the DNA dice-toss. They’re born with a gene where they have no empathy for others. If they can get away with something they will. They’d rather be crooked than straight. These are the people that will see a wallet sitting on the table, snatch it, and they’ve already got $500 in their pocket. They’re born that way. Most psychopaths are not violent. But the ones that are violent make headlines, like Ted Bundy. They enjoy killing.” DeLong also stated in the article written by Luaine Lee in 2015 for the Tribune News Service, she does think that some evildoers are born that way. “Their moral compass, the arrow didn’t point anywhere. They just didn’t have one. If you want to call that evil, then they’re evil. For me evil is people who commit premeditated murder and then lie. There are people that have black hearts,” she acknowledges. For me, as someone who is trying to assist Bob in raising awareness on mental health issues and see IF, WHEN, AND WHERE mental illness finds it’s roll in society with mass killings, NOTHING is more horrific than one who perpetrates evil, knowing they are wrong, yet doesn’t care. Is this a psychopathic behavior, a sociopath behavior, evil, or something else? INSIGHT INTO MENTAL HEALTH will be exploring this topic and what and if these personality disorders play a roll in the mass killings we so often see in today’s society. Please, understand this.... For each of us in the panel, we hold absolute "political ideals." HOWEVER, this issue, when conversed on Bob's show is NOT of a political forum. It is merely to research, discuss, and debate the elements of massive killers and the link with Mental Illness, WITHOUT A LEFT OR A RIGHT SIDE. For each of us, it is to address Mental Illness.
